OUR HISTORY
KLASSIK was the first Danish gallery for vintage furniture and was founded in 1991 and is still the leading gallery in Denmark. The company is owned by Thomas Schlosser.
When KLASSIK reintroduced Danish design furniture produced during the period called 'the Golden Age' (period shortly after Second World War ) many people were sceptical. Teak and rosewood furniture from that period were for many synonymous with 'bad taste'. The idea and its realisation was far from as selfevident as it seems today.
It went well - both for KLASSIK and for the rediscovery of Danish design furniture. Also foreign countries have discovered the quality and workmanship of Danish design furniture. KLASSIK is no longer the only shop in Denmark buying and selling vintage furniture. Other shops have emerged and many have disappeared again. Auction houses have adopted the idea and special auctions for modern design take place frequently. Furniture producers have resumed production of models, which have not been manufactured for years and museums arrange exhibitions. It is thus fair to conclude that there is considerable interest in furniture from the above period.
It all began in a small shop on Strandboulevarden. In 1994 we moved to much larger premises in Christian d. IX's Gade and finally in 2003 we moved to Bredgade 3 just around the corner from Kongens Nytorv. Into a showroom with 23 large windows directly to the street. Here a staff of 6 well informed specialists are ready to help the visitor.
On November 1st 2006 KLASSIK also opened a new store in Jutland in the city of Aalborg at Strandvejen 11.
KLASSIK'S approach has - from the very beginning - been to concentrate on nothing but the best concerning design, material and workmanship. Furthermore we have always emphasized correct identification of each art piece. It has also been important for us to preserve the objects in their original state. However, renovation is sometimes necessary since we are dealing with furniture that has been in use for many years. The renovation takes place in our own workshop where 6 very skilled artisans are employed and it is done as gently as possible using the original techniques and materials.
KLASSIK has a big warehouse full of furniture which makes it possible always to present a fine and varied selection of pieces in the showroom. Our warehouse is visited by wholesale customers from all over the world.
KLASSIK has a long history of arranging special exhibitions. Just to mention a few: Finn Juhl, Ole Wanscher, Arne Jacobsen, Frits Henningsen and a large 10 years jubilee exhibition called 'Chosen pieces' showing rare and exceptional furniture selected during many years. Right from the start we have complemented the furniture with glass and ceramics by the best Scandinavian artists from the same period and with modern Danish painting.
