Vibeke Mencke Nielsen is a Danish painter and graphic artist, born on December 6, 1937. She received her formal education from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1958 to 1964, under the tutelage of professors Søren Hjorth Nielsen and Holger J. Jensen.

Mencke Nielsen works with graphics and painting and is considered a visual artist in the broadest sense of the word. Her works focus on immediate subjects such as landscapes, portraits, and everyday objects. While the starting point of her works is naturalistic, they often take abstract and symbolic detours.

In 1989, Mencke Nielsen made history as the first female professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in the graphic school. She held this position until 1998. In addition to her teaching career, she is a member of the artists' association Kammeraterne and has created decorations for the Danish Crafts Council and the University of Copenhagen.

Parallel to her artistic work, Mencke Nielsen has also been associated with the Social Research Institute from 1964 to 1971 and Danmarks Radio from 1983 to 1987. She held several positions of trust, including the chairmanship of the Academy Council from 1987 to 1990, and her position as the president of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. She is a former member of the Board of Representatives of the Danish Artists' Council and a board member of a large number of museums.

In recognition of her contributions to the arts, Mencke Nielsen was awarded the Danish Arts Foundation's lifelong grant in 1998 and the prestigious Eckersberg Medal in 2005.
